CHAPTER SEVEN

Courtney brought Journey, a shepherd and husky mix, in through the back door of the shelter. “Good girl! That was a nice walk, wasn’t it? Yes! Let’s make sure you have lots of fresh water. There you go.”

She would’ve stood there for a minute and watched Journey happily drink, but when she looked up at the clock, she realized she’d been outside longer than she’d intended. “Sorry, sweets. I’ll see you again soon.” Courtney shut the kennel door, stopped in the bathroom to wash her hands, and headed into the office. “Is Louise Chambers here yet?”

Dora was on her midmorning break, sitting at her desk with a cup of coffee and the latest issue of For the Love of Dogs. The canine-centered magazine was a hit with most dog lovers, and one of their very own clients had been featured in it once. “Hm? Oh, the lady from the homeless shelter? No, I can’t say that I’ve seen her.”

“That’s odd.” Courtney checked her watch again and then compared it to the clock on the wall to make sure she had the right time. “She was supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago. I thought I’d be keeping her waiting. We wanted some time to really sit down and figure out this joint project between the two shelters. I’m excited for it, and I think it’ll be one heck of a way to bring our causes out in front of the community, but I’m not sure yet what we should do.”

Dora gave her a small smile. She was a quiet woman, so this was quite a bit of enthusiasm from her. “I’m sure you’ll figure it out. You always do.”

“I’m hoping so.” It would be a lot harder to figure out on her own, and it was strange that Louise wasn’t here yet. Thinking perhaps she’d gotten the day or the time wrong, Courtney picked up her desk phone and dialed The Sanctuary. There was no answer. Courtney hadn’t known Louise for long, but this didn’t seem like her.

Just as Courtney was picking up the phone to try again, the bell over the front door rang. Courtney set the phone down and peeked out into the lobby, and she darted out when she saw a very distraught Louise coming through the door. “What’s wrong? Are you all right?”

Louise swiped a finger under her eye and nodded. “Yes. Well, no. I mean, physically I’m fine. But Ethan has been arrested for Goodwin’s murder.”

Courtney felt a shiver of horror ripple under her skin and her mouth went dry. “Come back here. We’ll talk about it.” She brought Louise into the office and sat her down in an extra chair before getting her a bottle of water from the fridge. “What’s going on?”

Louise took a deep breath. She tipped her head back and closed her eyes. “I’m still trying to figure it out. The police showed up at the shelter and said they found evidence that implicated Ethan. I didn’t believe them. I just couldn’t!”

“Did they tell you what that evidence was?” Courtney asked.
