CHAPTER SEVEN
Courtney brought Journey, a shepherd and husky mix, in through the back door of the shelter. âGood girl! That was a nice walk, wasnât it? Yes! Letâs make sure you have lots of fresh water. There you go.â
She wouldâve stood there for a minute and watched Journey happily drink, but when she looked up at the clock, she realized sheâd been outside longer than sheâd intended. âSorry, sweets. Iâll see you again soon.â Courtney shut the kennel door, stopped in the bathroom to wash her hands, and headed into the office. âIs Louise Chambers here yet?â
Dora was on her midmorning break, sitting at her desk with a cup of coffee and the latest issue of For the Love of Dogs. The canine-centered magazine was a hit with most dog lovers, and one of their very own clients had been featured in it once. âHm? Oh, the lady from the homeless shelter? No, I canât say that Iâve seen her.â
âThatâs odd.â Courtney checked her watch again and then compared it to the clock on the wall to make sure she had the right time. âShe was supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago. I thought Iâd be keeping her waiting. We wanted some time to really sit down and figure out this joint project between the two shelters. Iâm excited for it, and I think itâll be one heck of a way to bring our causes out in front of the community, but Iâm not sure yet what we should do.â
Dora gave her a small smile. She was a quiet woman, so this was quite a bit of enthusiasm from her. âIâm sure youâll figure it out. You always do.â
âIâm hoping so.â It would be a lot harder to figure out on her own, and it was strange that Louise wasnât here yet. Thinking perhaps sheâd gotten the day or the time wrong, Courtney picked up her desk phone and dialed The Sanctuary. There was no answer. Courtney hadnât known Louise for long, but this didnât seem like her.
Just as Courtney was picking up the phone to try again, the bell over the front door rang. Courtney set the phone down and peeked out into the lobby, and she darted out when she saw a very distraught Louise coming through the door. âWhatâs wrong? Are you all right?â
Louise swiped a finger under her eye and nodded. âYes. Well, no. I mean, physically Iâm fine. But Ethan has been arrested for Goodwinâs murder.â
Courtney felt a shiver of horror ripple under her skin and her mouth went dry. âCome back here. Weâll talk about it.â She brought Louise into the office and sat her down in an extra chair before getting her a bottle of water from the fridge. âWhatâs going on?â
Louise took a deep breath. She tipped her head back and closed her eyes. âIâm still trying to figure it out. The police showed up at the shelter and said they found evidence that implicated Ethan. I didnât believe them. I just couldnât!â
âDid they tell you what that evidence was?â Courtney asked.
